Abba Bogin - Pianist, Conductor & QSO Musician (1925-2011)
Abba Bogin was one of the founding members of QSO in 1954 with David Katz and served as pianist, conductor and personnel manager up until his passing this September. We were blessed to have had such a talented, intelligent and musical friend in our orchestra. Here are a few facts about and memories of the late Mr. Bogin.
He worked extensively as a concert pianist throughout the States, Japan, Israel and Rumania, including Carnegie Hall. His major recordings included Beethoven and Brahms Cello Sonatas with Janos Starker.
Describing Abba: "one of a kind; bigger than life; a great musician of the last era; a most fair and loyal contractor/personal manager in the business; an anchor of kindness and good sense; never at loss for good jokes"...
A strong union advocate, Abba served as music officer for the NYS Council on the Arts and was a trailblazer in both the AFM and AGMA unions.
"Abba was one of the great men of our profession - a wonderful pianist and conductor - so wise, so giving to all who worked for and with him. There are very few people in our business whom I admired and liked in so many ways as Abba" - Arthur Fagen, QSO Conductor Laureate
(We are collecting more memories and pictures of Abba and look forward to sharing them with you soon.)
